On September 19, 2024, the Big Hoof Foundation (our non-profit orginazation) rescued a Belgian Draft horse from almost shipping to slaughter. The mare was rescued by another orginization back a few months ago. The horse was taken back to Bowie Texas Livestock a second time because the owner couldn't afford medical after she accepted the horse and found out how much treatment would cost for her eye cancer. The horse is missing an eye, was abandonded at quarantine, has terminal eye cancer and didn't receive the medical treatment she required. We couldn't let this poor horse suffer being at the kill pen again! So our foundation stepped in and rescued her! We named her Opal.
When she arrived to the farm, her eye was in horrible condition so we took her to the vet the next day. Our veterinarin examinded her eye and did x-rays to see where the cancer had spread to. Unfortunatly, the cancer had spread to the bone and also had eaten away at the lower eyelid causing an infection. Since the cancer has spread to the bone there isn't a surgery we can do to save Opal. Because of the neglect and lack of care by the previous owner, Opal will have to be euthanized.
Our foundation is going to give her a few weeks here on the farm to know what love is! She will understand before she goes what love, kindness and compassion are!
To honor Opal we are doing "Painting with Opal". Each unique painting will be created by Opal and no two will be the same! Profits from the painting will go to feed and care for the animlas on this farm and to remember a horse that deserved a much better life.
Each canvas is stretched and back stapled to a kiln dried wooden frame.
